“WCC’s work begins from the belief that everyone’s voice has inherent value. As such, WCC is exceptionally well-situated to support participants of the research study, writing and sharing stories of their service as military women.”
– Dr. Nancy Taber, author, professor, and WCC facilitator
We are pleased to announce our participation in an arts-based creative writing research project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and led by Dr. Nancy Taber, Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Brock University, and WCC facilitator.
The project, Reimagining military culture through counter-narratives: Using arts-based creative writing as a feminist transformative learning practice to explore Canadian military women’s gendered experiences, aims to engage women who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in WCC writing workshops that support them to work through and (re)claim their military experiences, improve wellbeing, and build community.
Employing WCC’s creative writing methodology, the study will trace the transformative power of community writing workshops and illuminate the under-represented, gendered experiences of women within military culture.

This research study, beginning in 2026, invites Canadian women who have served in the military to participate in a series of WCC writing workshops and two short research interviews. Participants will have the opportunity to explore, (re)claim, and share their service experiences through the power of writing in an inclusive, confidential environment.
